1901, Arizona. Stock certificate for one share issued to and signed on verso by GEORGE WASHINGTON KRETZINGER (1844-1913) American lawyer. Black / White. Green underprint and company seal. Pen cancelled At the outbreak of the Civil War, an underage George W. Kretzinger enlisted in the Missouri 7th cavalry, also known as the Black Hawk cavalry. After being captured and paroled, Kretzinger returned to his studies for a short time before returning to the service. Studying law subsequent to the war, Kretzinger came to serve as counsel for a variety of railroads. The youngest general counsel of a railroad company in the nation, Kretzinger argued and won two prominent cases: The Chicago and Iowa Railroad vs. the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad and the Chicago, Pekin and Southwestern railroad vs. the Chiacgo and Alton railroad. In addition, Kretzinger served as general counsel for and the director of the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway Co. since its incorporation. The Bradshaw Mountain Railroad was built to serve the mines of Arizona’s Bradshaw Mountains. These mines proved unproductive through, and the line served only as a paper railroad subsidiary of the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway.
