Brackett,TX - Kinney County - 1892 - Passenger & Express Line of Stages Letterhead :
Letterhead from "Brackett, Port Clark, Spofford, U.S. Mail, Passenger & Express Line of Stages." Vignette of stagecoach drawn by six horses with two drivers and five passengers sitting topside at center top. "O.M. Sholl, Livery, Feed," and H.C. Hunt, Sales' Stables" printed on either side of the vignette. Datelined Brackett, Texas, June 19, 1892. Addressed to Miss Ellen Dodson from Howard Hinds, it solicits her "honor and most auspicious company for a call" on Sunday night, the 26th. Below Hinds' signature is written "Bracketville, June 19, 1892." In 1852, The town was named after a Fort Clark settler named Oscar Brackett in 1852. The town grew around his store, and was initially called Brackett. When a post office arrived in 1875, the postal authorities added the "ville" to Bracket to avoid confusion with an already existing Brackett, Texas. After Kinney County was created in 1876, Brackettville became the county seat. When the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway bypassed Brackettville on its way to Del Rio, the town was saved by the business provided by Ft. Clark, while Spofford gained the most from the railroad. The years of 1878-1882 were particularly prosperous, although there was a flood in 1880 (and other in 1899). Even though the railroad bypassed Brackettville, daily stagecoach service was available to Spofford, 10 miles to the south. By 1896 the town had a population of 1,000 [Ref: texasescapes.com/TexasHillCountryTowns/BrackettvilleTexas/BrackettvilleTx.htm]. A rare piece.
