Brace of two American dueling/target pistols marked H. Gibbs, Lancaster PA on barrels. Found together, but not an exact pair. Pistol #1 shows a 9-1/4” barrel octagon barrel of approx. .50 caliber smoothbore. 16” overall. Backaction lock signed J. Gulcher. Engraved steel triggerguard with spur and pineapple finial. Single set trigger, half stocked in plain walnut with extended tang. The metal surfaces show a grey patina with light to slightly heavy pitting and erosion, mostly around the bolster and muzzle. The tang shows an old repair. The stocks are good with some small dings, mars, and scratches. Approx. 50% original varnish, generally good overall. The pistol retains a brass-tipped wooden ramrod. The associated mate measures 17” overall with 10” octagon barrel of .50 caliber smoothbore. The lock is marked Sprang & Wallace, Philadelphia. The top of the hammer is broken off and is missing. The metal surfaces show some light to slightly heavy pitting. The stock is fair to good with some dings, mars, scratches, dents, and some weathering. The butt is inlaid with a German Silver plaque that is inscribed C.W. Morris. Gibbs was a well-known maker of Kentucky rifles from
