includes 10 small broadside extras printed by the Bozeman Courier, between August 11, 1877 and September 17, 1877, documenting the latter part of the so-called Nez Perce War. Each printed a single newspaper column width on a 4" wide sheet, with lengths varying from 5" to 12". All with bold headlines designed to capture the public imagination, and inflame local fears of Montana citizenry. Examples of these include: TERRIBLE NEWS Fight on the Big Hole; THE INDIAN WAR Outbreak among the Indians; THE NEZ PERCES WAR. Indians in the Geyser Basin!; THE TOURISTS. All but Two of the Helena Party saved; HARD FOUGHT BATTLE ON CLARK'S FORK; DESTRUCTION OF THE NEZ PERCES; ALL THE NEZ PERCES' PACK ANIMALS TAKEN.

Like most of the conflicts that arose between the United States Government and American Indians, the so-called Nez Perce War had at it roots the seizing of traditional Indian territory for use by whites. When the Nez Perce were forced to abandon their traditional lands and remove to a government reservation during the spring of 1877, resentment turned to violence, and a desperate attempt at self-determination. Over the next four months, approximately 800 Nez Perces and Palouse Indians under the leadership of Joseph, White Bird, Looking Glass, and others, led forces under the general leadership of Major General O.O. Howard and Colonel Nelson Miles, on an 1800 mile chase that wound its way from eastern Oregon, into adjacent Idaho, Montana, and finally, Canada. These EXTRAS, some printing "in the field" dispatches by Army officers, and others from local sources deal almost exclusively with the presumed, and in some cases, real threat to Montana citizens. An August 26th EXTRA for example, reports the presence of the Nez Perce in the Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park, where they killed seven men and took several captives. Two days later, more news came in from Yellowstone: the captives were released, and another party suffered wounded and two missing -- ALL BUT TWO OF THE HELENA PARTY SAVED.

The final four sheets follow the course of the Nez Perce from the Yellowstone as they made a dash for Canada. Forty miles from the border, they were finally surrounded and trapped in the Bear Paw Mountains by troops led by Nelson Miles. After a five day's battle, their horses were stampeded, and Chief Joseph surrendered, and delivered his now famous oration ending with I will fight no more forever. The battle and surrender are covered with HARD FOUGHT BATTLE ON CLARK'S FORK; THE NEZ PERCES WAR. TWENTY WARRIORS FOUND DEAD; ALL THE NEZ PERCES' PACK ANIMALS TAKEN; and finally DESTRUCTION OF THE NEZ PERCES. An exceptional grouping, not listed in any source for Western imprints. Together with an unused lettersheet from Walter Cooper and Co., a railroad pass from the Northern Pacific Railroad issued to Cooper, and two tickets and envelope for Cooper and guest to the opening of the World's Columbian Exposition.

Descended in the family of Walter Cooper, a Prominent Montana Settler and Entrepeneur
