<td width="100%">
This is a museum quality boxwood alter piece of the Buddhist
Bodhisattva Kwan Yin. A pair of hands holds her on a lotus
blossom. She stands holding a Ruyi- the "as you
wish" scepter, a symbol of prosperity and health. The water
moon teaches the
empty and illusory nature of the physical world. This sculpture
comes from Dunhuang, China, a rural
city at the remote western end of the Great Wall. Since ancient
times, Dunhuang has been the western hub of commerce and
culture along the Silk Road between India, Tibet and China.
Guan Yin, the divine feminine mainifestation of compassion and
loving kindness, is also
known as Kuan Yin in China, Chenrezig and Tara in Tibet,
Kannon and Kanzeon in Japan.
This unque carving is a stunning example of the artistry and skill
the Chinese have developed in the creation of sacred art over the
centuries.
