Box Canyon Trading at Lupton, AZ, which is 28 miles west of Gallup. The claim to fame for this post was that it was first place to provide Navajo sandpainitings for commercial use. Their well-known sandpainter was Freddie Stevens, known as Grey Squirrel. This was significant because medicine men forbade the presentation of sandpaintings in weavings and paintings. The weavers were told that blindness would occur it they violated the sanctity of sandpaintings. Emphasis was always on weaving and paintings because those were the only chances of exploitation until Grey Squirrel. He never reproduced complete sandpaintings - which can only be done by medicinemen. However, he did take figures from sandpaintings such as male, female, sun, and moon, He created the figures on a small board, applied glue, and then added sand to create figures.
