Carlisle; four more speeches (all 1895) by Carlisle; Carlisle’s 1896 speech “Free Silver and the Workingman”; an 1896 speech of the Hon. Josiah Patterson; an 1896 speech of Senator William Lindsay; 1896 speeches of Bourke Cockran and John K. Cowen; and the Proceedings of the 1896 convention of the National Democratic Party. 8vo, contemporary black half calf, gilt, with mottled sides; spine ruled and lettered in gilt; decorative endpapers. Over 300 pages total. Near fine. The panic and depression of 1893 had revitalized the Silver Question as a political issue in the United States. Whether gold should be the sole standard on which the currency should be based or if silver should be remonetized was a pressing political issue explored by these speeches, collected and bound together by one Randolph Harrison, who signed several of them separately as well as the flyleaf of the bound volume. Some of these publications were produced and circulated by Sound Currency, a popular and important journal on the subject.
