. "Arrapahoe Prophet, Leader of the Ghost Dance" [strip label in the negative.] Boudoir by H. P. Robinson, Fort Sill O.T. Sitting Bull (same name as the great Sioux chief) was residing with the Northern Arapahoe in Wyoming. He learned about the Ghost Dance directly from the Prophet Wovoka. In 1890, at the age of 36, he came to the Southern Arapahoe reservation and presided over huge dances where he demonstrated his hypnotic powers. He is described in James Moody's "The Ghost Dance Religion and Wounded Knee" (available in a Dover reprint.) A rare image of this important figure.
