One of John Brown's many children, Owen was closely involved, but not an active participant, in his father's violent escapades in Kansas. He was one of the few survivors of Harpur's Ferry. For years he was on the run, and was discovered in 1874 on Put-in-Bay Island, Ohio. Eventually he joined his brother Jason, and they built a place called Las Casitas in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains high above Pasadena California. This is where the brothers have been photographed by F. H. Rogers, Los Angeles, as one of a series of Las Casitas Views. We see their little cabin, Owen beside a donkey, Jason astride one. It looks like a black or oriental person between them.
