Boudoir Card - SP of Nachez and his wife
Boudoir Card - Studio portrait of Nachez (son of Cochise) and his wife
Spring, 1884
Length 8 1/2 in. Width 5 1/4 in.

The words "Nachez…Nai-chi-ti, son of Cochise and wife, Chief of Chiricahua Apache" are printed in the negative. Also known as Naiche, Nachez is posed wearing a headband, dressed in a cloth shirt, vest, and pants but wearing traditional boot moccasins with cactus guards. His wife is dressed in a cotton blouse, dress, and head scarf. Her boot moccasins, also with cactus guards, are visible in the photo.
"Nachez was the son of Cochise and nominally head chief of the Chiricahuas, but like Mangus he was not warlike enough to satisfy his people and had been pushed aside - first by Juh, then by Geronimo, who arose as war leader after Juh had drowned in the autumn of 1883." Nachez participated in the uprising of 1885-1886 and remained with Geronimo and other "hostile" Chiricahua hiding out in Mexico. They were intensively tracked by United States Army troops, aided by Apache scouts. Geronimo and Nachez finally surrendered to General Nelson Miles in September, 1886. Photo by A. Frank Randall, Wilcox, Arizona Territory with his studio imprint stamped in purple ink on the reverse. A separate typed note is posted on the reverse stating "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1884, by A.F. Randall in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington."
