<B>Boston, MA</B></I> - $10 Original Fr. 409 <B>The Merchants NB</B></I> Ch. # 475<BR>This note, part of the Stella Family collection, was originally Lot 3506 of our January, 1997 Florida auction. We noted at that time "This is a rare type in this state of preservation, not to be confused with the far more easily available Series 1875 $10. Although pricing guides such as Friedberg and the Green Sheet reflect only minor pricing differences, our experience over a 30 year span has been that $10 Originals are outnumbered by Series 1875 tens in the uncirculated and higher grade ranges by at least a 20 to 1 ratio. This example, although impossible to grade Gem because of the trimmed in left margin (although the note is perfectly centered on the reverse), is one of the very nicest examples of this type we have ever had to offer. It is also one of the few we've seen with the early issue blue Treasury numbers as well. <B>Choice Crisp Uncirculated.</B></I> Time has borne out that 1997 observation, as the census now shows just five CU Original Series tens from all states combined, compared to well over 100 such examples in the 1875 series.
