Russian writer (1890–1960) whose novel Doctor Zhivago takes a place among the central works of twentieth-century literature. ALS, penned in his usual attractive purple ink, signed “B. Pasternak,” one page, 8 x 10.5, January 1, 1960. A “thank you” letter to Christmas greetings he received, and in it, Pasternak comments on a subject near-and-dear to his own heart: individual welfare, which in fact was much of the theme running through his famous Doctor Zhivago. In part: “Thank you and Mrs. Snider for your greetings. Your words…that there will be no universal peace until first of all there is individual peace within the human heart are most important. This personal touch seems to me to be the essence, the soul of the Gospel.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Pasternak’s hand, as well as the original letter sent to Pasternak from R. Wayne Snider, the Dean of Men at Grace College in Indiana. In fine condition, with bisecting mailing folds, and a mild shade of toning.
