Bopearachchi, Osmund. INDO GREEK, INDO SCYTHIAN AND INDO PARTHIAN COINS IN THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION. The National Numismatic Collection - Smithsonian Institution. 1993. 4to. viii, 143 (1) pages. Washington, D.C. original blue boards, gilt, dust jacket. map. 41 plates of coins. Fine. This book is a catalog based on two main categories of coins in the Smithsonian Institution: the General Collection, and the Malakand Hoard. The general collection of Graeco Bactrian and Indo-Scythian coins, 275 in number, is made of three major donations: by Raymond J. Hebert, former curator of the National Numismatic Collection, Smithsonian Institution, by W.F. Spengler, numismatist and collector, and by Markoff-Moghadam, former American Officer in Tehran. The group of 257 coins, known as the Malakand hoard named after its presumed find-spot. belongs to two dynasties; Indo Scythian: Azes II (114 specimens), Azes II with Aspavarma, (3 specimens), and Indo-Parthian: Gondophares, (85 specimens), Abdagases, (55 specimens). These coins are in excellent state of preservation and represent various types and new monograms. Their major characteristics have enabled the author to carry out metrological studies and to draw several conclusions regarding the development of the post Azes coinage and their relationship with the Indo-Parthian coinage of Gondophares and Abdagases. A significant catalogue. Lot weight: 2 lbs 2oz. Subject(s): Ancient Coinage.
