Boots and Saddles Rare 1st Ed. Elizabeth Custer
Included in this lot is the Rare First Edition of, "Boots and Saddles" by Elizabeth B. Custer, 1885, wife of Gen. George Armstrong Custer. This is a famous work on the life and military career of General George Custer, written by his wife, Elizabeth Custer. The honeymoon of Elizabeth Bacon and George Armstrong Custer was interrupted in 1864 by his call to duty with the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War. She begged to be allowed to go along, thus setting the pattern of her future life. From that time on, she accompanied General Custer on all his major assignments, aside from the summer Indian campaigns "the only woman," she said, "who always rode with the regiment." "Boots and Saddles Or Life in Dakota with General Custer" is a wonderful narrative of the life of General Custer on the plains during the mid 1800s until his untimely death in 1876 at the Battle of the Little Big Horn; a gentle, loving portrait of George Armstrong Custer, husband and man, by the person who knew him best. Book is in overall good condition. The original brown cloth bound book covers and spine have an illustrated sun stamped, its rays extending out across both covers and the spine, gold gilt on the front cover, which also has the images of a bugle underneath a song stanza score sheet. Scuffing is exhibited on cover edges, stains noted, crayon markings are on title page, pencil writing on rear end page, intact pages exhibit some water staining, age tanning and foxing noted throughout. No other obvious marring noted, measures 5"W x 7.5"L x 1"D
