Great hunts and firearms!
Boone and Crockett Club-Theodore Roosevelt Commemorative 125th Anniversary Rifle, Winchester Model 1886 .45-90 Lever-Action by Turnbull Manufacturing
Donor: Eldon L. "Buck" Buckner
In September of 1887 Winchester delivered Theodore Roosevelt’s fifth Winchester made to his exacting specifications. In December of the same year, Roosevelt formed the Boone and Crockett Club.
To commemorate the Boone and Crockett Club’s 125th Anniversary, the Club commissioned renowned historic rifle maker, Doug Turnbull of Turnbull Manufacturing to build two exact replicas of Roosevelt’s Winchester 1886 .45-90, using restored original Winchester 1886 actions.
Known as the Tennis Match Rifle, as Roosevelt purchased it with winnings from a match, it was his primary big game rifle from 1887-1894 which included most of his ranching years in the Dakota Badlands. Roosevelt used this rifle to take more than 100 big game animals including grizzly bear, elk, caribou, mule and whitetail deer, and his largest bighorn ram.
His hunts with this rifle helped Roosevelt forge a unique understanding of all things wild – an understanding and commitment that is arguably the reason why we have, and can enjoy wild places and wild things in North America today. Our hunting heritage is strong in this country and nothing stirs the imagination of what it was like “back then” and what it took to re-gift America its wildlife abundance like the look and feel of a true American original sporting arm that can still be put to practical use today.
