Booker T. Washington on Lynching

Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) African American educator and reformer, very fine content Autograph Letter Signed "Booker T. Washington", one page on Tuskegee Institute letterhead, Tuskegee, Alabama, August 10, 1893 to Mr. Bridgman concerning an article on lynching slated for publication. During the height of the lynching epidemic at the turn of the twentieth century, he writes: "Enclosed I send the finished article on 'Lynching.' It is longer then you requested and such longer than I waned it to be, but after trying several times I could not reduce the length. It is a delicate subject and I did not want to discuss it all without treating all sides and making my position well understood. If it is too long I am willing to try to reduce it. I know that short articles are the best. --- Yours truly Booker T. Washington." Despite Washington's advocacy of reconciliation between the races, lynching in the South continued unabated. According to the N.A.A.C.P.'s Anti-lynching Committee, 3,224 people were lynched between 1889 and 1918, of those 2,522 were black and 702 were white. The justifications for lynchings included such excuses as "using offensive language, refusal to give up land, illicit distilling" and other "offenses." Bright and clean and in extremely fine condition. Important content from one of America's towering figures in Black history. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
