Booker T. Washington. TLS. A one-page typed letter on Tuskegee Institute letterhead signed by Booker T. Washington as Principal May 10, 1915. The letter is an appeal for funds for scholarships. One fold in center, otherwise in very nice crisp condition. Washington, an educator and social activist, was born into slavery in 1856, and recounted his childhood in his book Up from Slavery. He founded and ran the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute and became one of the most controversial leaders of his time. He was at odds with other civil rights figures such as W.E.B. Du Bois because he advocated self-help through economic means rather than through basic civil and political rights.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
