TLS, one page, 7.75 x 10.25, Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, October 23, 1905. Letter to Frank G. Beardsley, the secretary of the Harlan Chautauqua Association, in full: "At this time I am unable to say whether I shall be able to fill any chautauqua engagements in Iowa next August. I shall be glad, however, to keep your inquiry in mind. I appreciate very much your thought of me in this connection." In fine condition, with fading to the typed text and light brushing to the signature.

A Chautauqua was a popular movement of adult education courses and entertainment events held outdoors during summers in the late 19th and early 20th century. Washington, perhaps the most influential African American leader of his time, spoke at a number of these events.
