Booker T. Washington, Clipped Signature,
framed under glass, bold signature on 1.25 x 3" piece of paper. Washington was born into slavery in the late 1850's, and was still a child when the war ended and slaves were freed. Shortly thereafter the family moved to West Virginia, and Booker's mother obtained a "blue-back" spelling book. According to his autobiography, he taught himself to read, since he knew of no member of his race who could teach him and he says he was too shy of the white people to ask any of them. Later he had lessons both at night and in regular classes, hungry for knowledge, and he never looked back. He is best remembered for beginning the school for "his race," as he put it, at Tuskegee, AL.
Paper lightly toned, with some foxing.
