This book, Doctor Luke of the Labrador is the 4th edition published in 1905 (originally published by Fleming H Revell Company, 1904). The inscription on the inside page reads;
"To Mrs. Smith,
A reminder of the happiest hours of an eventful week - the hours spent by the fireside of a beautiful home.
W.L.MacKenzie King
Ottawa Oct.14-08".
The Rt. Hon. William Lyon MacKenzie King ) was the 10th Prime Minister of Canada. With over 21years in the office, he was the longest serving Prime Minister in British Commonwealth History, and was the serving Prime Minister during the war years, having close connections with Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
This book was a gift of gratitude to a Mrs. Smith from MacKenzie King in 1908, whilst he was Minister of Labour, and just after he had won a by-election for the Liberal Party. Who was Mrs. Smith? Possibly a rooming house landlady, or was she "A discreet mistress"?
