Book of Hours Manuscript Leaf
France.
Ca. 1520s.
4"H. x 2-1/2"W. leaf, 13" x 15" frame.
Single illuminated recto page of a single vellum folio from a French Book of Hours, in Latin, c. 1520-1530 with the final lines of the reading from the Gospel of Luke, and the opening to the readings from the Gospel of Mathew, "Cum ergo natus esset Iesus." This exquisite page was removed from a small prayer book known as a Book of Hours. It was painted in France in a Parisian atelier known as the "1520s Workshop." The five-line miniature depicts Saint Matthew accompanied by an angel, symbol of the Evangelist, who holds up a book for him to read. Both figures show the influence of Italian art, with their classically inspired features, and bright, clear palette. The image is framed in gold, as is the text; there is a gold initial "C" and the rubrics are in gold and black. Humanist script, dark brown ink, white parchment. A beautiful page in excellent condition; matted and framed.

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
