The Hungarian-born Willy Pogany (1882-1955) studied in Budapest, Munich and Paris, then migrated first to London, where he designed these volumes; one year later (1914), he migrated even farther -- to America, where he achieved renowned fame for the design of Metropolitan Opera stage sets, for Broadway productions, for institutional and theatrical murals, for architectural design, for Hollywood art direction and last but not least book design and illustrations. Pogany was responsible for the selection of paper, binding, text, decorative elements, and of course for the illustrations themselves. Every page includes his artistic work -- some with decorative borders, some with full-page two-color illustrations, and some with tipped-in color plates. Now for the exciting part this book is signed by Willy Pogany ? giving this book an even rarer and exciting history! Few composers have had so powerful an impact on their time as Richard Wagner (1813-1883). His operas and artistic philosophy influenced not only musicians but also poets, painters, and playwright. Such was his preeminence that an opera house of his own design was built in Bayreuth, Germany, solely for performances of his music dramas.
