Important LS in French, signed "Dacier," one page, 8.5 x 13, Institut de France letterhead, August 23, 1826. Letter signed by the important historian regarding the death of Thomas Jefferson. In part (translated): "I have received the letter that your excellency has made me the honor of writing to announce the painful news of the death of Mr. Jefferson, foreign associate of the Academy. I have communicated it to the company in the session of today and it has joined the deep pain and regret that his death has caused in his homeland with the demise of such a great citizen. I am also personally touched by this loss and I have the honor to thank your excellency in the name of the Academy for this communication. Please accept the assurance of my high consideration. I take the liberty to ask your excellency to please forward the enclosed letter to the Philosophical Society of Philadelphia." In fine condition. A fascinating letter in which the Academy of France reacts to the death of Thomas Jefferson, who had served as Minister to France from 1785 to 1789. A significant and historic piece.
