Width 31 in.

This banded textile is a Jihuacota tari, or coca cloth for use in Aymara women's ritual ceremonies as a ground cover or a coca leaf wrap. It is woven in a striped pattern using natural dyes of brown, red, gray, purple, blue, and green. The knitted binding of red, white, and blue fibers finishes all edges. Cotton and camelid fibers, or fibers from soft tree bark, are traditionally woven in a square format using a warp face technique. The condition is very good.

Provenance
Collected 1981 in La Paz, Bolivia, by Steve Berger and Roger Yorke
Arte Textil (Steve Berger), San Francisco

Important notic
