Lot of 2 photographs and 2 postcards, including: 1) Photograph of four men sitting in an automobile and one standing just outside. Unmatted, measuring 3 3/4" x 4 3/4". Contrast is medium, focus is sharp. "Billeb Bodie 55" hand-printed in pencil on reverse. Included is a photocopied page of this image, which notes the date it was taken (June 12, 1905), the names of the five men pictured, and the driving time required from Bodie to Carson City (9 hours). The photographer, Emil Billeb, was active in mining and railroads in Nevada and California from 1905-1950s. Known for his book, Mining Camp Days, he was also a vocal advocate for the creation of a California State Park. This photo is remarkable because of the banker, Mr. Cain at left holding his stopwatch as if to time the auto. This photo is a recordation of the first automobile into Bodie and as such is exceptionally important. One tear on right side of image, several tears along black border, fine overall condition. 2) Photograph of winter in Bodie, with snow covering the road and buidlings straddling the street. Measures 5 1/4' x 3 1/4", with meduim to low contrast and fair to good focus. No photographer listed. Several small tears and some mild discoloration along edges, otherwise fine. 3) RPC with caption " Bodie - Miners Union Hall Bodie, Calif. Frashers Foto, Pomona" in lower right corner. Front view of Union Hall with raised wooden sidewalk and smaller wooden structure ti its left clearly visible. 4) Choice, early c1905-1908 RPC of Bodie in winter, although no caption or clearly visible signs help verify location. Looking down major street, appears to be after significant snowfall. Contrast medium, focus good, with 3 stain/spots on image, otherwise fine.
