The accompanying quotation from Le Moal refers to the group as being made by “ironsmiths” and traditionally worn only by them, though today also made for farmers. He notes that, though Bobo masks were primarily used in initiations, “in the case of the ironsmiths' masks, they may also have a role in funerals” (<I>loc. cit</B></I>). In addition to use abrasions, paint loss, and water stains, the proper left ear is a replacement and there is a considerable old loss area at the proper left rear of the helmet. There is an old cloth patch (1 ½ inches square) on the lower proper right rear of the helmet, the proper left horn is cracked approximately 2 ½ inches from the tip with a chip missing, and some pegged-in teeth are missing from the proper right side.<BR><BR>Provenance: Gary Hendershott, Little Rock<BR>TAD Tribal Art and Design (Taylor A.
