Bob Scriver (1914-1999) Warrior Scouts c. 1962
This is an original circa 1862 Bob Scriver “Native American Warrior Scouts on the Scent” chalkware sculpture. Chalkware sculptures were done by Scriver himself at his home foundry for a limited time, very few are known to exist. Robert Mcafee Scriver (1914-1999) was born in Browning, Montana (in the heart of the Blackfoot Indian Reservation) in 1914. Scriver began sculpting using taxidermy to learn his craft of making wildlife bronzes. By 1962 he became a charter member of the Society of Animal Artists, had been accepted into the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America, listed in Who’s Who in American Art, and a member of the National Sculpture Society, and the National Academy of Western Art. The piece depicts a scene of two Native American men on horseback following trails of other horses and men. They are examining a U. S. Army canteen that had been dropped. Both are holding spears and one has a large shield on his back, while the others is slung around his hip. The piece shows great attention to detail throughout the men, the horses and the terrain they are on. The piece is signed twice around the bottom edges reading, "©1962 Bob Scriver". The piece shows fair condition overall with some large chipping in the back of one of the mens necks, a partially broken spear tip, and a broken spear tip. The piece measures 15" L x 10 1/4" W x 14 1/4" H and weighs 13 pounds and 10 ounces.
