Bob Marley Funeral Program. The man most respons Bob Marley Funeral Program.
Bob Marley Funeral Program. The man most responsible for introducing Reggae music into the global consciousness, Bob Marley's untimely death from cancer in 1981 cut short a brilliant career, but also gave rise to a legend. In the months before his death, he was baptized into the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and took the name Berhane Selassie (meaning "the Light of the Holy Trinity" in Amharic) and was awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit. He had hoped to spend his final days in Jamaica but he became too ill on the flight home from Germany and had to land in Miami, where he died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital on May 11, 1981. His funeral in Kingston, Jamaica was a dignified affair with combined elements of Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari, as befit the man, and was officiated by an Ethiopian Orthodox Archbishop and attended by both the Prime Minister and Governor-General of Jamaica. Rumor has it he was buried in a crypt near his birthplace, with his Gibson guitar, a bud of marijuana, and a Bible. This rare, original eight-page program from Marley's funeral details an elaborate, stately service that featured many hymns, prayers, and readings of verse from the Bible. The booklet is in Excellent condition with very little discoloration and some moderate wear, soiling, and creasing.
