Blunt & Syms Under-Hammer Pepperbox Pistol with Rare Original Picture Carton
This medium frame, double-action, six-shot, under-hammer, percussion pepperbox was sold by the firm of Orison Blunt and John G. Syms in New York City in the 1830-1850 period. The pistol has a blued barrel group frame and grip strap with casehardened ring trigger and varnished, bag-shaped, two-piece, walnut grips. The receiver and backstrap are decorated with open, well-executed, scroll engraving. The barrel group screw and face of the barrel are stamped with the assembly number "17" and two punch-marks. "R-C" is also stamped on the face of the barrel. The pistol has an oval cap-slot on the right side of the frame and the fluted barrels. The ultra rare, triangular, cardboard picture carton has a black ink picture of a six-shot, under-hammer pepperbox pistol with ring trigger and bag-shaped grips. "BLUNT & SYMS/44 Chatham St. & 177 Broadway/NEW YORK" is marked in bold lettering below the pistol. "GUN and PISTOL/Manufacturers,/Importers and Dealers in/Every article in the line/Wholesale & Retail" is marked diagonally on the cover below the pistol grip. The sides of the carton and the lid are printed with a delicate maroon floral design. The carton is complete with a steel ramrod with jag tip and flared head. This is one of the very few, pre-Civil War pepperbox pistols existent with the original dealer carton.

Very fine. The pepperbox retains 70% of the original blue overall finish with only very minor wear. Most of the blue finish remains on the barrel group and backstrap. The scroll engraving is very sharp. The ring trigger has a dove-gray, patina. The percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder show very minor flash-pitting. The grips are in excellent condition and have most of the original varnish. The action is crisp and functions well. The cardboard picture carton is in fine condition. The picture on the lid is clear. There are several breaks in the edges of the lid and one corner is torn. The two corners on the wider end of the carton are broken and have Scotch tape repairs. The corners on the narrow end of the carton have old repairs. The steel cleaning/ramrod is in very good condition. This is an exceptional example of a Blunt & Syms Under-Hammer Pepperbox Pistol with medium frame complete with a nearly un-obtainable picture carton.
