This superb large vase demonstrates the fine quality and elaborate underglaze painting typical of the porcelain from the reign of one of the Qing dynasty's greatest patrons of the arts – the Qianlong Emperor. During his reign vases of this form were made with both straight and flared necks whereas the form with flared mouth – as seen in the present piece – appears to have been preferred by the Emperor. It is also found amongst monochrome porcelains of this period. The floral decoration is clearly inspired by the underglaze cobalt floral scrolls on early Ming porcelains. Qianlong vases of this type were generally produced at the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen and delivered to the emperor in pairs.

Vases of this shape can be found in the Shanghai Museum. The museum’s collection includes a vase of the same form, but slightly smaller and with Doucai decoration.

Condition: The vase is in perfect condition. It has a height of 57 cm.
