There is an interesting story to this painting. This was apparently painted on the British Channel Island of Guernsey. The piece is not signed, whoever the artist that painted this beautiful little watercolor did it as a New Year's Gift. The inscription on the bottom of the painting reads in Old English "A Happy New Year to You". On the back of the painting there's another inscription: "A Happy New Year with kindest rememberances from Bleak House Guernsey" and on the bottom "Petit-Bot Bay Guernsey". Bleak House was made famous in Charles Dickens' novel by the same name. Charles Dickens actually lived in "Bleak House" (although that was not the name at the time) while writing David Copperfield (1849-1850). After he sold the house it was renamed by the subsequent owner "Bleak House" after Dickens' novel. At some point Bleak House was a hotel, I don't believe its in existence any longer. I just thought this was an interesting little bit of info. I wonder who painted this "gift", but whoever it was they were very talented. It's a lovely littel watercolor in wonderful condition with the original gold wood frame, making the total dimension 6 x 4.75.
