Blanche Barrow Birth Certificate, Photo, etc.
Blanche Barrow Birth Certificate, Photo, and Prison Parole Correspondence Archive. The first item is a true and correct Certified Copy of Iva Blanche Caldwell's Birth Certificate, issued in 1943. A one page document, 8.5" x 7.5", partly printed and filled in by typewriter, in very fine condition. It shows her date of birth as January 1, 1911 in Garvin, McCurtain County, Oklahoma and her parents as Matt Fountain Caldwell (40) and Lillian Bell Pond (16), both white, and both born in Arkansas. Blanche's parents were divorced when she was young and her father who she adored raised her. The second item is an 8" x 10" B&W photo of Blanche and her father with a written inscription by Blanche: "My Father M F Caldwell and Me- Blanche Barrow". Fine condition.

There are several other items in this lot- all letters regarding Blanche's early release from prison and all glued down to loose leaf sheets and found in her personal albums. Several are written by a William J. Winkler on Winkler Laboratories in Denison, Texas, a close friend and former employer of Blanche's. In one he writes: "Blanche Barrow is going to lose the sight of her eyes unless something is done for her soon. She must have the services of the best eye surgeons or she will be forever blind--a martyr for a gross miscarriage of justice. Blanche never did anything wrong in her life. She did fall in love and marry a man whom she thought to be clean and upright only to learn that he was a criminal and an escaped convict...If you will parole Blanche, I will see that she is given the care of eye specialists and save her sight if possible. When she has recovered, I will give her a position; for Blanche worked for me once, and I know her to be Clean, upright, dependable, and thouroughly decent..." An interesting group of nine letters from the mid-1930s that obviously meant a lot to Blanche personally. Overall very good condition.
