Blanche Barrow's 1939 Prison Sentence Commutation and 1940 official permission to remarry. Blanche was the third wife of Marvin "Buck" Barrow and a member of the notorious Barrow Gang. As such, she participated in a string of armed robberies with Buck, Bonnie, Clyde, and the rest of the gang in the early 1930s. Buck and Blanche were captured in Dexter, Iowa in July 1933; Buck died and Blanche was sentenced in Missouri to ten years in prison for assault with intent to kill. A model prisoner, her sentence was commuted to six years and, on March 25, 1939, she was released from the Missouri prison system to be on probation for an additional two years. This Conditional Commutation certificate for Blanche Caldwell Barrow is 11" x 17.5", partly printed, issued on March 22, 1939, and signed by Governor Lloyd C. Stark, with the state seal affixed. It spells out the terms of her probation, and that she was headed to Garvin, Oklahoma to live (with her father). Fine condition, original folds.

Also in this lot is a Typed Letter Signed by Robert C. Edson, Director of Probation and Parole for the State of Missouri. One page, 8.5" x 7.5", Jefferson City, April 16, 1940 to Blanche Barrow. As a condition of her probation, Blanche had to get permission to marry and this was granted as follow, in full: "After giving your request to marry very careful consideration, and having made a complete and thorough investigation, I am pleased to inform you that we have decided to grant you permission to marry Eddie B. Frasure. I certainly hope that you will be extremely happy, and that this marriage will be a very strong factor in bringing about your satisfactory readjustment and stabilization." His words were very prophetic as Blanche and husband Eddie lived happily together until his death in 1969. Blanche never remarried. About fine condition, blank area below bottom fold not present, one red ink stain.
