Blackhawk #9 (Quality, 1944) CGC VF 8.0 Cream to off-white pages. After a three-year run in first Military Comics, then Modern Comics, Blackhawk gets his own titled book, and begins a run, with an interruption here and there, that lasts some 40 years. Chop-Chop (who is painfully stereotyped viewed from today's perspective) uses his meat cleaver as a conductor's wand to lead a Blackhawk chorale, but there is much seriousness on the inside as Blackhawk leads his multi-cultural team into wartime missions of derring-do. Al Bryant's artwork carries over from the neat cover through all the Blackhawk stories inside. The issue also features stories starring Rasputin (the ape) and Ezra (teen humor) for comic relief. An excellent copy of this key Golden Age book, only three others have been graded as high by CGC. Don't let the numbering fool you; this is, in effect: Blackhawk #1 and would be a prize addition to any serious collector's collection. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $2,083.
