Blackfoot Tacked Harness Sheath & Trade Knife 1870
The lot features a fantastic, authentic, circa 1870’s Indian War era Blackfoot Native American Indian tacked sheath and trade knife. The sheath is crafted from thick harness saddle remnant leather, likely traded or recovered by the Blackfeet, and further adorned with an amazing linear pattern of old brass trade tacks. The old brass trade tacks show a nice, even authentic patina and green coloring, often found on period correct examples attached to leather, all from honest age and use. The reverse of the sheath shows a hide belt tie. The sheath is paired with an original 19th Century trade knife with typical slip point end and skinner-like blade, showing a two piece wood coffin-like grip held together with what appears to be copper rivet pins and adorned with a pattern of old brass trade tacks, likely indicating the user’s name, tribe, clan, etc. The piece shows an overall nice original patina. This is truly a wonderful authentic set that displays beautifully. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Dale Harrison of Ohio. The sheath measures 12 ¼ inches long by 4 ½ inches wide. The trade knife is 12 ½ inches in length.
