This is an excellent Blackfoot (Blackfeet) Native American Indian beaver back dag knife from circa 1850. The dag shows hard wood grips with six copper rivets securing the blade to the handle and a forged “beaver back” dag iron blade having a double edge. The wonderful authentic dag knife is from the 19th century in circa 1850 and is from the renowned Ex-collections of Scoville/Crissman/Francis. The dag is accompanied by a Blackfoot wonderfully beaded sheath with the correct stylings of the mid to late 19th century on Buffalo Indian tanned hide (with the sheath being a later addition). The knife and sheath have been pictured in the following publications/books: “Plains Art: A Study of Artifacts of the Central Plains” (2008) by F.C. Crissman; “The Mark Francis Collection of American Indian Art” (2009) by Mark Francis; “Early Knives & Beaded Sheaths of the American Frontier” (1997) by John Baldwin (a book that is now a collector item of its own worth $400-$1200 as it has become a must have knowledge on edged weapons, lending to the overall rarity and value of this dag). This is truly an exceptional well documented authentic example. The knife measures overall 12.5”L with the sheath measuring 15.5”L.
