Blackfoot Beaded Hide Hunting Tobacco Bag
The lot features an Indian buckskin tanned hide beaded hunting bag or tobacco pouch from the Blackfoot / Blackfeet Native American Indians of the Northern Plains. The bag is comprised of Indian brain-tanned buckskin with a long braided shoulder strap attached. The piece shows artistic beaded geometric beadwork which goes across the front and top flap. The beads show older colors of cobalt, chalk white, greasy yellow, sky padre blue, semi-transparent red and later semi-transparent medium green at the center. The front ties has two brass trade beads as well. The entire outside edge of the bag has long frilly brain tanned fringes. It is said that these types of hunting bags were used to hold such things as extra iron point arrows, extra bullets, baits and other implements the Indian needed to bring along. Has nice supple hides and little to no bead loss. Ted Levy ex-collection. Measures overall with top strap 33”H by 17”W, bag itself is 6:H by 5.25”W without fringes or handle.
