Black Powder Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Ivory Grips and Factory Letter
The included Colt factory letter confirms the serial number, caliber, barrel length and finish, with the type of stocks listed as rubber (now fitted with two piece ivory grips). The letter states that the revolver was shipped to Colts Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company, Hartford, Connecticut, on August 8, 1888 in a shipment of 25 guns. (The exact reason for the Colt Hartford shipping address is unknown at this time. Why did Colt ship to itself?) The barrel is marked with the one line Hartford address, "44 CAL" on the left side of the trigger guard, and three line, three patent dates marking on the left side of the black powder frame. Fitted with two piece ivory grips with the right panel adorned with a 1886 dated seated liberty dime. Matching serial number on the frame, trigger guard, and backstrap.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44-40
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: ivory
Serial Number: 123847
Condition: Very good. The revolver retains some strong amounts of original blue on the ejector rod housing, trigger guard and backstrap and some patches of silvered out case colors on the frame with the overall balance a smooth brown-gray patina. There is a light "shadow" of the original acid etched panel on the left side of barrel. The slightly shrunken grips are very good with a repaired chip (left panel), a couple small missing chips, and some hairline age cracks, along with some minor scratches.
