This masterpiece presents black laborers building a stockade and a drainage ditch around the machine shops and yard of the Orange & Alexandria Railroad during the Civil War. 12.75" x 8.25", (18" x12.5" overall). Bearing a printed title on the mount just below the albumen which reads: "No. 294.--STOCKADE BUILT BY GEN. HAUPT, For the Protection of Government Property, enclosing Machine Shops and Yard of Orange & Alexandria Railroad." Irregular bottom margin to mount with light foxing at edges, a few light abrasions to photograph that do not detract from this remarkable piece of history. Housed in a 20" x 16" mat.
