The envelope, honoring John Philip Sousa, is 3-5/8" x 6-1/2", and is postmarked Washington, May 3, 1940, Extremely Fine. Handy lived from 1873-1958. He was the first to arrange and publish songs in the mode known as "blues"; his 1941 autobiography was called "Father of the Blues."
