Leader and warrior of the Sauk American Indian tribe (1767–1838). Original hand-colored lithographed portrait of Black Hawk, 7 x 10, removed from an 1870 edition of Thomas McKenney’s monumental three-volume History of the Indian Tribes of North America. The illustration plates were based on paintings by Charles Bird King. An irregular ripple to the upper border and a pencil notation to the bottom, otherwise fine condition.
