Abraham Lincoln mourning crepe worn by Admiral C.H. Eldredge on 25 April 1865, as he stood Guard of Honor when Lincoln lay in state in New York. After being assassinated by John Wilkes booth on 14 April 1865, Lincoln died the next day and was taken to the White House first before being transported on the special funeral executive coach ''United States'' for three weeks from Washington D.C. to Springfield, Illinois. This crepe was worn during the memorial of the New York leg of the trip. Long strip of black crepe was worn by Eldredge from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at City Hall where Lincoln's body rested. With provenance including Eldredge's printed assignment to the guard detail in New York, dated 25 April 1865, with original envelope. Measures 39'' x 6'', in very good condition.
