Bisbee,AZ - Cochise County - No Date - Hotel, Palace and Saloon Photograph *Territorial* :
People pose in front of the Palace Hotel, Saloon and Store. Photograph measures 6 1/2”x4 3/4”, gray single matte 9”x7”, high to medium contrast—tends toward the grays, and the focus is sharp. Palace Hotel, Copper City Beer, and Furnished Rooms all read clearly. Though small, the faces are still discernable. There are a couple spots from foxing on the upper center. No photographer identified. Bisbee is located about 30 miles south of Tombstone. It was an important copper mining camp located in Mule Gulch. Barnes quotes a letter from Wm. A. Greene describing the Bisbee’s beginning, “the town was started in 1877, after discovery of the mines by Jack Dunn, a local prospector. It is claimed by some that George Warren was the first discoverer of the mine here. The camp was named in honor of Judge DeWitt Bisbee, one of the early stockholders and a brother-in-law of the Williams brothers, for many years managers of operations in these mines.” (Arizona Place Names) A post office was established in 1880. This photo has a lot of detail depicted an early Bisbee. The Palace Hotel proprietor was Fred. Fuss.
