Birdman of Alcatraz Robert Stroud Signed Letters
Birdman of Alcatraz. Robert Stroud two Autograph Letters Signed, “Bob/Robert Stroud #594” and, at top of the each first page, “Robert Stroud/P.M.B. 594, Alcatraz, California.” In dark pencil, each to his sister, Mamie E. Stroud, Metropolis, Illinois. Comprises: (1) February 4, 1946 “I spoke to the warden a short time ago about a correspondence course from the California U. which I wish to take. It is on Bacteriology. He said that he would have it ordered for me. I have not received the course yet, but I got the text books last week, and they are sure fine. I have only had time to read half of one of them, but if the course lives up to the texts, it will certainly be exactly what I needed…What kind of business is Glen in?...it seems that any business that will not earn a living within a year has little chance of doing so, unless of course, it is some business (like chickens, birds or animals) where it takes years to build up the necessary stock. I hope he makes a good go of it…” (2) February 12, 1946 “I just had a swell letter from Marcus…We did sell $170 worth of books in December and $214 worth in January. There were two nice articles in the last issue of American Canary, and it looks like he has really been on the job. He says that the only trouble is that he has not had 5 hours sleep per day for months…I had to cut down on some of my exercize but I am feeling better the last week. I know what is wrong with me. The effect of those shots I had last year is dying out. I think I will try to get some more soon and don't anticipate much difficulty…” Letters in which Stroud mentions birds are extremely desirable. He had written two books on canaries and their diseases. Usual folds.
