[Rowe, John J.]. THE JOHN J. ROWE COLLECTION AT THE CINCINNATI HISTORICAL SOCIETY, AS ARRANGED BY ALDEN N. MONROE. Two binders containing several hundred pages of photocopied material from this important collection of paper money and historical documentation concerning early Ohio and, in particular, Cincinnati. The binders include images of hundreds of early Ohio notes along with historical documentation and articles relevant for their study. Materials generally fine. John J. Rowe was President of the Fifth Third Union Trust Company of Cincinnati and also was a curator of the Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio (now the Cincinnati History Library and Archives). His publications included Money and Banks in Cincinnati Pre-Civil War (1948) and Pioneering and Money in the Ohio River Valley (the same year). The first binder provides a bit of the history of the collection: “The John J. Rowe collection is the result of many years of active collecting by Mr. Rowe. The final product is an excellent group of materials dealing with banking in the Old Northwest during the early 1800’s ... The materials included in the collection consist of banknotes, newspaper clippings, correspondence, information about various banks, and numerous other items.” According to the consignor, these binders were assembled by Don C. Kelly, noted researcher in the field of American paper money.
