Bill Ward - Original Splash Page for Joker (Humorama, 1967). This page is from the September, 1967 issue of the Joker gag magazine. This is a nice example of the legendary "Ward Woman." Bill Ward's disproportionate female form made him a favorite among young Golden Age comic collectors and later among their older counterparts when he began working for Humorama and other similar companies that produced the digest-sized adult gag books. This piece is typical in its representation of an elderly man ogling a well-endowed woman while she destroys any hope that he may have with her. The caption for this image read, "What do you mean, I didn't appreciate the diamonds? Did you, or did you not receive a thank-you note from me!" This piece appears to have been done on newsprint paper with conte crayon, painted white-out and a very small amount of ink. It is mounted on a thin piece of 18.5"x25" illustration board. Tape is holding the image in place, and there is a 2" tear at the bottom of the woman's leg. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
