Famed American tennis player (1893–1953) whose major tournament victories number in the dozens (including six consecutive years as U.S. Singles Champion). Though his reputation was tainted by a pedophilic scandal and a jail term in the 1940s, a 1950 Associated Press poll named him the greatest tennis player of the first half of the twentieth century. ALS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Theatre O’Five letterhead, no date. Letter of invitation to his new play. In part: “My new play–New Shoes opens Friday evening…at the El patio & I do hope you can be with us. We are holding four seats at the box office for you.” Tilden also adds a short postscript saying the opening date has changed. In fine condition, with light toning, and a pencil notation of March 1, 1948, in another hand. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
