Famed American tennis player (1893–1953) whose major tournament victories number in the dozens, including six consecutive years as US Singles Champion. ALS in pencil, signed “Bill,” two pages both sides, 5 x 8, no date but postmarked December 7, 1949. Letter to Marion Anderson and his protege Arthur Bratto, in part: “Tempus is forgetting and I am getting shorter & shorter and more eager to get out naturally but am trying to keep it cool & calm at least until Sunday when I’ll see you again. I have no news at all but will wait until after mail comes before I end this. I am given the chance to ease off a bit at work, as I am breaking the man in to my job so I have a lot more time in the morning. I will try to keep my exercise up so I’ll be in pretty good shape when I get out…It looks to me as if Pancho [Gonzalez] is slipping and [Jack] Kramer is carrying the scores along. I knew he was not in Kramer’s class. I guess [Pancho] Segura has really gone ahead as a pro. He sounds tough to beat.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in his hand and signed again in the return field, “W. T. Tilden.”
