Bill Holman - Smokey Stover Sunday Comic Strip Origin Bill Holman - Smokey Stover Sunday Comic Strip
Bill Holman - Smokey Stover Sunday Comic Strip Original Art (Chicago Tribune, undated). Bill Holman tilted the art of the comic strip on its axis with his nutty Smokey Stover, a pun-filled cartoon commotion which careened out into the public eye on March 10, 1935. Holman maintained this spontaneous hootenanny for many years, with a long-running side strip, Spooky, a cat as kooky as his master. This undated strip (leave it up to the unpredictable Holman to not indicate a date anywhere on the art) has a note written at the bottom: "To our old fooriend Gill Fox long may he rave -- fire-ever. Bill Holman '76." The art measures 24" x 16' and although there are some slight stains, this art is in Very Good condition. The Spooky strip has been cut and pasted onto the art along the bottom. From the collection of Gill Fox.
