ALS, one bright green page, 8.5 x 11, November 19, 1994. Griffith addresses the next generation of cartoonists. In full: “I’m not sure what lies behind your students lack of optimism regarding their ‘chances’ in the field of art and/or cartooning. It could be a general malaise brought on by the last few decades of overall cynicism & skepticism concerning just about everything. Maybe you’re confronting junior ‘slackers’—I don’t know. What I do know is that there will always be art & there will always be cartooning in our culture (& most other cultures as well) & therefore, there will always be new artists & cartoonists making their mark. And, yes, hard work is a larger & important element in the development of talent. Talent is just the spark. Hard work & education provide the fire for real creativity. ‘Fame & Fortune’ are merely by-products of recognized creativity. If they are the goals an artist, the art will be, by definition, cynical & shallow. Patience is an important trait every artist should learn. Someone once said ‘Art is 90% perspiration & 10% inspiration.’” In fine condition, with scattered light handling wear. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
